Antioxidants – The secret of Anti-Aging
Have you ever wondered why? Well, it’s because it’s harmful to our body. That’s right, the very oxygen that gives life to every living being on the planet is also inherently dangerous to our existence. This is called Oxygen Paradox.
Scientific research has established beyond a shadow of a doubt that oxidative stress or the damage of the cells by free radical is the underlying cause for more than 70 chronic degenerative diseases. Free Radical Attack:-When the oxygen is converted inside the body (in mitochondria, within the cell) into energy, a free radical is produced. Free radicals are unstable molecules which attack and destroy vital parts of the cell in the muscle, skin, hair, digestive system, immune system and all body tissues. The same process that is responsible for the rusting of iron or cut apple turning brown is the underlying indicator of diseases like the coronary artery disease, cancer, strokes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s dementia, multiple sclerosis. That’s right, we are rusting from inside. Since it causes damage to the DNA nucleus of the cell, it may be the actual villain in cancer.
Factors affecting the creation of free radicals:-
- Excessive exercise especially high intense exercise
- Excessive stress
- Air Pollution, pollution of our food and water
- Ultraviolet Sunlight
|People who are emotionally stressed and start chain smoking or drinking way too much, put their body literally under war without any chance of winning whatsoever.|
Body’s defense system: – Your body has a very sophisticated defense system to protect it from the attack of free radicals. The damaged proteins, fats and DNA are not just repaired but rather removed completely and then again built from scratch. So the damaged protein molecule is replaced with a brand new protein molecule.
Our body produces the antioxidants needed to fight the free radicals, but it’s not sufficient. When the production of free radicals increases far beyond what our body’s antioxidant army is capable of, then we have to rely on external sources to get all the antioxidants needed, which we get from our food.
But the quality and quantity of antioxidants we get from the food we eat today is not the same (with all the processed food we eat) as we used to get from the food we ate a few generations ago.
The nutrients in the food are not enough to provide all the antioxidants required so we have to supply it with good quality Antioxidant supplements.
Ageing and Antioxidant:- Ageing is just a faster breakdown of muscle and all body tissues which is accelerated by free radicals attack and weakened antioxidant defenses.
|Free Radical=Faster ageing Antioxidants= Anti-ageing|
Hence, a powerful antioxidant protection is vital for the protection against muscle loss and weakening of all body system and slowing down the process of ageing.
The Antioxidant Army:- Our body’s antioxidant defense system consists of
Minerals:- chromium, zinc and selenium.
Vitamin C and E are the powerful leaders of this army. Vitamin E is also well known as Anti-Ageing Pill; Vitamin A(beta-carotene), selenium, zinc, chromium, copper and manganese are the soldiers of the army. They all act synergistically towards fighting free radicals and protecting our muscles and tissues.
Living too short, dying too long:- Its not the quantity of age that matters but the quality of age. I wish to live till I die.
Is this your desire too? Well, certainly nobody looks forward to living to a ripe old age if they don’t even recognize their closest family members or are suffering from a severe joint or back pain because of degenerative arthritis.
Since the food sources don’t provide the optimum quantity of these antioxidants, its supplementation will be an essential choice to protect our body from the free radical attack and the harmful effects caused by it.

The RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for antioxidants (Micronutrient) may be enough to avoid any deficiency diseases caused by it, but it doesn’t fulfill body’s requirement for optimum protection against the free radical attack.
The optimum quantity for these Antioxidants should be
Vitamin C – 1000 mg
Vitamin E – 400 IU (International Unit)
Selenium – 100-300 mcg
Zinc – 30-60 mg
Chromium – 200-600 mcg
